Inamoto declares himself fit for England

JAPAN TODAYの記事から，気になった表現を調べて紹介したいと思います。World Cupへ向けての調整のため，イングランドとの練習試合を控えたサッカー日本代表。メンバーの一人でベテランMFの稲本選手が岡田監督にイングランド戦出場を直訴しました。

Veteran midfielder Junichi Inamoto has given Japan coach Takeshi Okada a timely boost by declaring himself fit to play against England in a World Cup warm-up in Austria on Sunday. Having just recovered from a hamstring pull, Inamoto may not be ready to start against Fabio Capello’s men, but even a short stint would add defensive muscle to a team still reeling from a 2-0 defeat to bitter rivals South Korea on Monday.
 
Inamoto has first-hand knowledge of the English game having played for a number of Premier League teams including Arsenal and Fulham, and the 30-year-old is determined to banish the painful memory of breaking his leg during a challenge with Nicky Butt when the two countries met in a 1-1 draw in Manchester in 2004.
 
‘‘I still have a little bit of stiffness but its okay. I want to play against England,’’ Inamoto said after Thursday’s training session in the Alpine village of Saas-Fee. ‘‘I have bad memories of the last time I played against England and this is a special match for me. This is another World Cup coming up for me and I need to keep up my confidence.’‘
 
Inamoto was a frustrated spectator as South Korea eased past the Japanese in Saitama and he feels the team simply needs to show more guts.


hamstring pullは「膝腱（ハムストリンング）の肉離れ」を指します。「肉離れ」はpulled muscle（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。日本語では「離れる」ですが，英語ではpullを使うことが分かります。
stintは「限られた時間」。
ここでのmuscleは「力, （特に）強制力, 圧力」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）という抽象的な意味で使われています。
stiffは「〈人体筋肉などが〉思うように動かない, こわばった, こった, 痛い」で，have a stiff neckで「肩がこる」になります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。stiffnessはその名詞形で，ここでは「張り」という意味でしょう。
最後に，ease past~ですが，手元にある辞書には載っていませんでした。しかし，単語から推測して「圧倒する」「楽勝」といった意味だと思います。こういう言い方があるんですね。
