動かぬ証拠？

これは2010年3月26日のTHE DAILY YOMIURI（１面）に掲載された写真の小見出しです。そして以下のような英文が続きます。

Piles of guns are burned in Nairobi on Wednesday as part of a Kenyan government campaign to recover and destroy illicit small arms and light weapons that have contributed to rising violent crime in the East African nation. A total of 2,545 firearms were burned in the public demonstration.

煙を上げる銃の山は文字通りsmoking gunsです。しかし、さらにもう一歩踏み込んで、辞書でsmoking gunを引いてみると、字面の意味の他に「動かぬ証拠」という意味があることに気付きます。銃を燃やして犯罪を減らそうとしている一方で、燃えている銃がアフリカで広まっている犯罪を示す「動かぬ証拠」になっているというironyが感じられます。
