今回はdetonation /dèṭənéɪʃən/ を紹介します。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「爆発, 爆発音」とありました。LDOCEには動詞detonateで “to explore or to make something explode” 定義されており、名詞では「爆発物」を意味します。他にも「爆発」を表す単語は多くあり、例を挙げるとexplosionがあります。上記の単語とはニュアンスが少し異なります。というのは、explosionは「爆発で飛び散った破片」を指す単語なのです。
内容に戻りますと、detonationは明らかに「核実験」を表している単語です。(amphibian)
