札幌で発生した、42人が重軽傷を負った爆発事故。原因はスプレー缶のガスに引火したものと見られています。
The explosion occurred at around 8:30 p.m. in Toyohira Ward, resulting in a fire that was extinguished at 2:10 a.m. An employee of the real estate agency told police about the disposal of the spray cans. It is suspected that gas from the cans ignited when a water heater was switched on.

気になったのはignite /ɪɡˈnaɪt/ です。文脈から「爆発する」といった意味になると推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「...に火をつける、点火する、(人・心など)を奮起させる、(議論など)を燃え上がらせる、(暴動など)に火をつける、(物・燃料などが)燃え始める、(怒りなどが)燃え上がる」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “to start burning, or to make something start burning” と定義されています。Oxford Living Dictionariesをみると語源がMid 17th century (in the sense ‘make intensely hot’): from Latin ignire ‘set on fire’, from ignis ‘fire’.と載っていました。
100本近いスプレーの中身を放出する作業した後、給湯器に点火したところ引火という流れには唖然とします。身近に起きるかもしれない事故なので私達も注意が必要です。(seventh-dan)
