grandiose 復習

今回は自分の英単語帳からの紹介です。

grandiose /ˈɡrandɪəʊs/ です。Grandから「壮大な、雄大な」といった意味に関連しているのではないかと思いましたが、確信は無かったので調べることにしました。以下で定義等触れていきます。

初めに Collins English Dictionaryを用いると、“If you describe something as grandiose, you mean it is bigger or more elaborate than necessary.” とあります。

次に Macmillan Dictionaryの力を借りると、“designed to look very impressive, but really looking artificial or silly.” と載っています。

以上から、grandioseは「堂々とした、壮大な」という意義の他に「気取った、大げさな」といったネガティブな表現で使われる場合もあることが判断できます。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
