2008年にノーベル化学賞を受賞した下村脩さんがふるさとの長崎市内で死去しました。90歳でした。
By isolating GFP from the crystal jellyfish Aequorea victoria in 1962, Shimomura helped create a "tool" that allows researchers to trace the movement of a minuscule protein molecule within a cell. This is done by connecting GFP to the molecule.

minuscule /ˈmɪnəskjuːl/ を取り上げます。minu-の部分から「小さい」に関係するのではないかと推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「非常に小さい、ちっぽけな、小文字の」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “extremely small” と定義されています。例文をみてみると、Compared to its adult size, a new-born kangaroo is minuscule.やHer office is minuscule.が載っていました。語源はEarly 18th century: from French, from Latin minuscula (littera) ‘somewhat smaller (letter)’.となっています。(Oxford Living Dictionaries)
下村さんのお言葉で、特に私の胸に突き刺さるものがあります。それが「苦労すればするほど人間は向上する。苦しい時代を経験したことで、難しいことから逃げないようになった」です。普段の英語学習に対する姿勢に応用していきたい金言です。(seventh-dan)
