今回取り上げるのは、“throw one's hat in the ring” です。直訳すると「帽子をリングに投げる」となりますが、これでは意味が通じないため調べてみました。
LDOCEには、“to say publicly that you will compete in an election or for a job” とあり、『ウィズダム英和辞典』には、「（選挙・競技などへの）参加を正式に表明する」と載っていました。
また、インターネットで語源を調べてみると、ボクシングの試合で、見物客が「自分も試合に加わらせてくれ」という意味を込めて、リング内に帽子を投げ入れたことから来た表現だということが分かりました。
