まず Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“a story or a situation that is exciting because its ending or result is uncertain until it happens” とありました。また、LDOCE には “a situation in a story, film, or competition that makes you feel very excited or nervous because you do not know what will happen or have to wait a long time to see how it will end” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“1930s: from early film serials in which episodes ended with characters in desperate situations such as hanging off the edge of a cliff” とありました。
