feigned 復習

『砂の女』英訳版より、気になる表現を見つけました。本日はfeigned /feɪnd/ を取り上げます。“…thus he had hit upon this feigned illness.”という文の中で使われておりました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)によりますと、「偽りの、見せかけの、作り物の、架空の、不正な」と記されておりました。さらに同単語の上に目を向けますと、feignとあり「〜のふりをする、〜を装う、〜と見せかける、装う」と記されておりました。同列には「”feigned illness”、仮病を使う」とも記されており、まさしくこのことから引用部での意味は「仮病を使うに至る」といった意味になると思われます。

It is July 7th, 20:38 in Lincoln, Nebraska now. I came to one of the favorite cafés near the campus to do my homework for today. I happened to come this café on the day of a music performance.

The good old Irish songs are being played by two musicians. They are playing early modern Irish music based on the history of Irish people who landed on the U.S. around 19c. They play these kinds of music with relatively contemporary instruments such as, the banjo, the accordion and the acoustic guitar.
