今回取り上げるのはcoalition / kòʊəlíʃən /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「（党・国家などの一時的）連合,合同,（政治）連携」と記載されていました。LDOCEにはa union of two or more political parties that allows them to form a government or fight an election togetherやa group of people who join together to achieve a particular purpose, usually a political oneやa process in which two or more political parties or groups join togetherとありました。
co-とあるので「ともに」といったニュアンスはすぐに想像がついたと思います。al-がラテン語で「育つ」という意味を持つalescereに由来しているようです。「一緒に育つ」という感じの単語であることが分かりました。（rain）
