　東京外環道のうち、埼玉と千葉を結ぶ区間が開通しました。

New section of Tokyo Outer Ring Road opens

A new 15.5-kilometer section between Misato, Saitama Prefecture, and Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, of the Tokyo Outer Ring Road opened on Saturday.

The opening marked the completion of about 60 percent of the beltway running around the outskirts of Tokyo’s city center, whose planned total length is 85 kilometers.

The section will allow people in the bay area of Chiba Prefecture to travel to Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, and Tochigi and Gunma prefectures, north of Saitama, without going through the center of Tokyo.

beltway /bɛ́ltwèɪ/ を取り上げます。highwayなどのようにwayが含まれることから、道路のことをさしていることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「1（米）（大都市の）環状道路（英　ring road, orbital） 2（the B〜）（米）ワシントン政界」とありました。

　Merriam-Websterには “a highway skirting an urban area” や “the political and social world of Washington, D.C., viewed especially as insular and exclusive” と定義されています。

　以前ブログで取り上げられていたものを見てみると、the BeltwayはWashington, D.C.をとりまく環状道路であるInterstate 495をさし、そこから転じてホワイトハウスの政権中枢やそこにいる人々のことを表すようになったことが述べられていました。上記の英和辞典で調べた際には、なぜ「ワシントン政界」という意味があるのか疑問に思いましたが、その意味を持つようになった理由を知ることができました。（aqua）
