vandalism 復習

京都の人気観光スポットが観光客から被害を受けました。

According to the city government and other sources, such vandalism has increased since about February this year, and the city confirmed the trees had been damaged in late April after reports from a company it entrusted to manage the walkway. The company has put up notices in three languages banning carving and graffiti.

今回はvandalism / ‐dəlìzm / を紹介します。-ismとあるので「—主義者」といった意味になるのではないでしょうか。
『ロングマン英英辞典』には “the crime of deliberately damaging things, especially public property” と定義されていました。続いて『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）では「芸術作品・公共物などの（意図的）破壊[汚損], 非文化的蛮行」とありました。

上記の名詞がvandal / vˈændl / になります。意味は「（芸術作品などの）破壊者」また「バンダル人」とありました。バンダル人（族）とは4, 5世紀にガリアローマなどを略奪したゲルマン民族で、このことから「破壊、汚損者」という意味になったと言われています。(amphibian)
