　東北新幹線の男性運転士が居眠り運転をし、仙台駅での停止位置を約20メートル通り過ぎて停止していたことがわかりました。

The driver of a high-speed Shinkansen bullet train admitted to being asleep at the wheel when he pulled into JR Sendai Station on April 1 and overshot the stopping point.

The Tohoku Shinkansen Line train arrived at the station at faster than normal speed, forcing the conductor to apply the emergency brakes.

The train came to a halt 20 meters beyond its designated stop, and had to reverse, according to the Sendai branch office of operator East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) on April 13.

Initially, the driver in his 40s said that he mistook the stopping point. But on April 13, he admitted that he had been nodding off at the time.

　at the wheelを取り上げます。文脈から、「運転中に」という意味になるかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると “at （behind）the wheel” で「運転して、支配力を持って」とありました。例として、 “a man at （behind）the wheel” で「ハンドルを握っている人、（船の）舵手；（物事の）責任者」と説明されています。

　LDOCEには “asleep at the wheel/switch” の形で “not paying attention to a situation, so that something bad happens” と定義されています。悪いことが起こっている際に目を向けない様子を表すようです。

　運転士は最初、停止位置を間違ったと説明していましたが、調査により、約4分間居眠り運転をしていたことが明らかとなりました。（aqua）
