slay 復習
鹿児島県で３人が殺害され、のち２人は行方不明の事件がありました。
HIOKI, Kagoshima Prefecture--Police found the bodies of two people on April 8 who are believed to be relatives of a 38-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of killing an acquaintance here and who hinted at being involved in more slayings.
Tomohiro Iwakura, who is unemployed, admitted to killing Hiroyuki Goto, 47, on April 6, according to police. A police autopsy revealed that Goto was suffocated to death. Goto lived in the same apartment building as the suspect in Hioki.

今回はslay / sleɪ / です。初めて出会う単語なので『ジーニアス英日辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べてみました。すると、「（主に米）＜人＞を殺す」とありました。これと同じ意味でkill / kíl / があります。しかし、killは直接的な表現なので、遠回し語としてslayが用いられます。
また『ロングマン英英辞典』によると、“literary to kill someone – used especially in newspapers”と定義されていました。
ちなみにslayingで「殺人」となりますが、これも新聞用語になります。(amphibian)
