今回取り上げる単語は reiterate /riíṭərèɪt/ です。この記事では say や state のような用いられ方をしているので、単語のイメージは容易につかむことはできましたが、不安があったので『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で意味を調べてみると「何度も繰り返して言う」とありました。
re-＋iterate という単語の構成から iterate についても同書で引いてみたところ「繰り返して言う、反復する」という同様の意味が載っていました。
違いをOxford Dictionary of English (2th) で比較してみたいと思います。reiterateは"say something again or a number of times, typically for emphasis or clarity"と定義され、iterateは"perform or utter repeatedly"と定義されています。この定義をみると reiterate はの方が強調された表現で「念を押す」のような意味合いがあると考えられます。(ko-chi)
