JR西日本の新幹線のぞみの台車に亀裂が入るという問題が起きました。

West Japan Railway Company says a crack found in the undercarriage of a Shinkansen bullet train last December may have been caused by a lack of structural durability, as its steel material had been shaved thinner than planned.

The undercarriage was manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 2007. 100 other undercarriages used on other Shinkansen trains owned by JR West were reportedly made with the same substandard steel material.

JR West says it has already replaced or scrapped 18 of the undercarriages. 6 had potential durability problems. Ultrasonic screenings on the remaining 82 have so far revealed no safety problems, but the company plans to replace them all within a year.

今回取り上げるのはundercarriage / ʌndəˌkærɪdʒ /です。carriという部分から運ぶといった意味があるのではないかと推測しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「〈飛行機の〉着陸装置」とありました。このままでは文意にそぐわないため、さらにWeblio英和和英辞典で調べると「〈自動車、トレーラーなどの〉下部構造、車台」とありました。
ここでは新幹線ということで台車という訳になると思いました。

今回の問題は、台車の制作過程で底面を削ったことによる溶接部の割れが原因とのことです。日本の新幹線は昔から事故があまりないという印象がありました。この重大インシデントにおいて、なぜ削る必要があったのか等、疑問の迅速な解明をし、今後につなげていく必要があると感じました。(sixth-dan)
