つづいてCambridge Dictionaryで定義を確認すると“to compete with other people to achieve or get something”とありました。ちなみにcompeteのほうは“to try to be more successful than someone or something else”と定義されています。集団のニュアンスが表現するために今回vieが用いられていると思います。(Kiwi girl)
