　奄美市の海岸で黒い油のようなものが漂着しているのが発見されました。先月沖合で沈没したタンカーから流出した油ではないかと考えられています。

Sludge hits Kagoshima isles, may be from sunken tanker

AMAMI, Kagoshima Prefecture--The Japan Coast Guard is investigating whether countless chunks of sludge that have washed up on beaches in southern Japan are from a Panama-registered petroleum tanker that sank in a collision last month.

The globs, which were elastic and emitted the pungent odor of petroleum, were found scattered over 500 meters on Asani beach in this city on the northern part of Amami-Oshima island on Feb. 1.

　“sludge”/ slˈʌdʒ /を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「(タンクなどにたまる)沈積物、(エンジン内の)汚れた油、スラッジ；ヘドロ、汚泥」とありました。また、LDOCEの“sledge”の項目では、“thick dirty oil in an engine”と定義されています。ちなみに、語源は中華英語の“slitch”で、「軟泥」という意味だったそうです(「goo辞書」)。また、元は擬声語だったのではないかと言われています。(Blue Sky)
