Hobbled yokozuna Kisenosato dropped out of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Jan. 19 after starting with a dismal 1-4 record, the fifth consecutive tournament he has failed to start or finish, possibly raising calls for him to retire.

Kisenosato's stablemaster, Tagonoura, told reporters in the morning of the day that the yokozuna had injured the left pectoralis major muscle of his chest.

　見出しにある“have back to wall”を取り上げます。直訳すると背を壁につけるというような意味になりますが、どのような意味で使われているのでしょうか。手元の辞書に載っていなかったので、インターネットで検索してみました。「英辞郎 on the WEB」には“have one's back to the wall”で「進退極まる、背水の陣を敷く、絶体絶命になる、剣が峰に立つ、土壇場に追い込まれる」とありました。また、Macmillan Dictionaryでは“to be in a difficult situation with few choices, so that you have to work or fight very hard”と定義されていました。記事が相撲に関するものなので、「土俵際に追い込まれる」などと訳してもいいかもしれません。(Blue Sky)
