Suicide rate at record low, but cases rise among 19-and-unders
The number of minors who took their own lives increased in 2017, despite overall suicides dropping for the eighth consecutive year to a record low, government statistics showed on Jan. 19.
The total number of suicides last year came to 21,140, marking a reduction of 3.5 percent, or 757 people, compared to 2016, the preliminary National Police Agency (NPA) figures showed.

“minor”/mάɪnɚ/を取り上げます。「マイナー」という言葉は日本語にもなっているので知っている人も多いかと思いますが、「少数の」という意味があります。この単語には他に、「未成年者」という意味があります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。確認のためにLDOCEを引いてみたところ、“someone who is below the age at which they become legally responsible for their actions”と定義されていました。ちなみに、“minor”というと“major”が対義語として有名ですが、「未成年」という意味に対する意味があるのか気になったので調べてみました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』の“major”の第５義に「成年者、成人」とあり、この意味においても対義語として関係があることが分かりました。(Blue Sky)
