Bygraves's world was changing, and he wasn't happy about it. There were fashionable working-class teddy boys in drainpipe trousers, upper-class girls slumming it in coffee houses, traffic jams instead of London trams, parking meters.

drainpipe trouserを取り上げます。まずdrainを『ジーニアス英和辞典』で引くと他動詞の「〈液体〉排出させる」「〈容器など〉から水を抜き取る」「〈酒・グラス〉を飲み干す」「〈財産・資産・精力など〉を徐々に消耗させる」「〈人を〉（よい条件で）〔国外へ〕流出させる」や自動詞も同じく多くの意味を持つことがわかります。
　また名詞では「排水溝、放水路」「排水管」「（貨幣などの絶え間ない）流出、消費」を意味します。
　次にtrousers/trάʊzɚz/を調べると「［〜s;複数扱い］ズボン」とあります。この２つが組み合わさると「脚にぴったり合った細い男性用ズボン」となります。LDOCEでは“tight trousers with narrow legs”と定義されていました。
上記ではロンドン生まれでシンガーソングライターのマックス・バイグレイヴスさんが世の変化、特にファッションにおいて“脚にぴったり合った細いズボンを履いたteddy boys（1950年代に現れたEdward VII(1901-10）時代風の服装をする反抗的青少年）”の登場に悲しんでいることが述べられています。(Kiwi girl)
