KUMAMOTO--While politicians often follow in the footsteps of a parent and start their careers young, the presence of a 7-month-old boy in an assembly session here caused quite a stir Nov. 22.
The tot in question was brought to a Kumamoto municipal assembly plenary session in the arms of his mother, assembly member Yuka Ogata, but was quickly removed.

見出しで使われている“get the boot”を取り上げます。“boot”というと靴の「ブーツ」ですが、実は第２義に「解雇、くび」という意味があります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』第３版、三省堂)。この意味で使われる場合、“the”がつきます。また、“get [be given] the boot”で「〈人が〉ふられる、愛想を尽かされる；(会社などを)クビになる」となります。確認のためにLDOCEを引いたところ、“the job”は“when someone is forced to leave their job”と定義されていました。“get the sack”が同じ意味で使われる表現として示されていました。ちなみに、“get ~ a boot”だと、「~を蹴とばす」という意味になってしまうので、冠詞を間違えないように注意が必要です。(Blue Sky)
