Colossal purple 'balloon' in Tokyo is actually a concert hall

A gigantic purple "balloon" sprang up in central Tokyo early Sept. 14.

The hulking object is a portable concert hall designed by acclaimed Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and British sculptor Anish Kapoor.

Ark Nova in the courtyard of the trendy Tokyo Midtown complex in the capital’s Roppongi district will remain there through Oct. 4.

The venue is made out of strips of purple polyester, and is 18 meters high and 30 meters wide. About 500 people can fit inside.

　hulking /hʌ́lkɪŋ/ を取り上げます。コンサートホールの形を表す言葉かと思いましたが、少し違いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「ずうたいが（恐ろしいほど）大きい、かさばった、大きくて不格好な」とありました。名詞の形hulk /hˈʌlk/ は「1（船などの）残骸；廃船（の船体）（貯蔵所などに用いる）　2ずうたいの大きな男、うどの大木；かさばる物」などの意味を表します。

LDOCEには “very big and often awkward” とあり、awkwardという言葉があることで、ただ大きいだけではないというマイナスの要素が感じられます。

　語源を調べてみると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “Old English hulc "light, fast ship" (glossing Latin liburna, but in Middle English a heavy, unwieldy one), probably from Old Dutch hulke and Medieval Latin hulcus, perhaps ultimately from Greek holkas "merchant ship,"” とあり、もともとは商船を表す言葉で、それがだんだんと変化していったことがわかりました。（aqua）
