LONDON (Reuters) — Princes William and Harry paid a quiet tribute to their mother Princess Diana on Wednesday, a day before the 20th anniversary of her death that has reignited interest in one of the world’s most famous women.

　“stiff upper lip”を取り上げます。“stiff”があることから上唇を硬くしている様子、つまり我慢に耐えるといったことを表していると思いました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)の“lip”の項目を見ると“keep a stiff upper lip”で「(困難の中で)耐える、くじけない」とありました。“keep”ではなく“have”を用いることもあるようです。また、『英辞郎 on the web』には“stiff-lipped”で「感情を顔に出さない」とあり、日本語と同じように唇を噛み締める様子から我慢をするといったニュアンスが生まれることがわかりました。(flying bird)
