Minami Alps tunnel for maglev line shown to press

Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) on Wednesday showed to the press part of the site for a tunnel to be constructed under the Minami Alps huge mountain range as part of its magnetic levitation ultrahigh-speed train line.

The construction of the 25-kilometer underground tunnel, between the town of Hayakawa, Yamanashi Prefecture, and the village of Oshika in neighboring Nagano Prefecture, is thought to be the toughest phase of the maglev train project, as it will run 1,400 meters below the ground surface at the deepest point.

Reporters were allowed to view a 2.5-kilometer evacuation route constructed at the Yamanashi side in Hayakawa. Construction work for the evacuation route started in October 2016 and was completed in late June this year. JR Tokai briefed the reporters on progress in the project.

　levitation /lɛ̀vɪtéɪʃən/ を取り上げます。リニアモーターカーは磁気で浮かせて走ることを考えると、空中に浮いている状態を表す言葉のようです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「空中浮揚」とありました。また、動詞の形levitateは「（心霊術などで）（…）を空中に浮かせる、空中浮揚する」という意味になります。

　LDOCEには “to rise and float in the air by magic, or to make someone or something do this” と定義されています。

　見出しにあるmaglevは “magnetic levitation” をくっつけた語で、磁気によって浮かび上がることを表現しています。（aqua）
