気になったのは “unwanted toxins” / ʌnwɒntɪd tɒksɪnz / です。一見, 何の変哲もない表現ですが, “unwanted” の用法に着目しました。これまで “want” は 「…したい, …がほしい」といった, 「望み」を示すものとして認識していましたが, 本文ではヒトの感情に関係なく用いられています。
そこで “unwanted” の意義をいま一度確認したところ, 「求められていない」のほか, 「役に立たない」と載っていました(『リーダーズ英和中辞典』研究社)。またお茶の飲用による効果の一つに, “detoxing” とあることからも, “unwanted toxins” は体内の「老廃物」を指していると考えられます。
普段の即興スピーチなどで「老廃物」を変換する, となると悩みますが, 「不要な」 “unwanted” + 「毒素」 “toxins” と表す英語は, ストレートでシンプル志向な言語だということを改めて感じました。(Cayu)
