“enshrine”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈考え・権利・習俗などが〉(大切なものとして)A〈法律・神話など〉に述べられている、謳われている」とありました。LDOCEでは“formal if something such as a tradition or right is enshrined in something, it is preserved and protected so that people will remember and respect it”と定義されています。この単語には“shrine”「神社」が含まれています。そこに“en-”をつけることによって、「〜に[の中に]入れる」という意味を付加しています。今回の記事では「語り継がれている」などと訳いても上手くいくかもしれません。(Blue Sky)
