　“turf” / tɜrf / を取り上げます。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 第一に「芝生」とありました。ここから, 俗語で「(暴力団や不良グループの)縄張り」を表すそうです。本文には “colony” や “foe” とあることからも, 後者を示していることがわかります。The Free Dictionary.comには “slang US the territory or area of activity over which a person or group claims exclusive rights” と定義されていました。さらに語義を確認したところ, 「<患者を>たらい回しにする」といった状態を指すと知り, 「芝」からはイメージし難いその表現に驚きました。(Cayu)
