More women getting hooked on angling
OSAKA — An array of equipment, from fishing rods to lures, greets visitors to Shimano Square, a serene angling showroom and cafe. Inside, some customers flick through magazines while others check out the about 80 items of fishing gear.
Shimano Square, which opened in February at the Grand Front Osaka shopping complex in central Osaka, is an angling exhibition space and cafe where alcohol is also served in the evening. The space is run by Shimano Inc., a fishing gear manufacturer in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, to promote angling as an urban sport. On some days, visitors can even seek advice from angling “concierges.”

“angle” / æŋɡəl / を取り上げます。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 「魚釣りをする」とありました。名詞として「角度」を示すだけでなく, もとは「(あるものを得るために)仕掛けや小細工をする」といった動作を表すそうです。The Free Dictionary.com には “to fish with hook and line” と定義されていました。ここで, 同様の意味をもつ “fish” と比較したところ, 主に釣針による漁獲を指す “angle” に対し, 網や銛などで捕るというニュアンスをもつのが “fish” といえるのではないかと思いました。(同英和辞典)(Cayu)
