One balmy late spring day last week, I was out for a bicycle ride in the beautiful Japanese satoyama countryside. I had gotten an early start, and had already spent several hours chasing butterflies and belly-crawling through the grass to photograph tiny wildflowers. As the sun reached its zenith I began looking for a cool spot to rest for a while.

Just then I was passing by an oak woodland. The new leaves on the deciduous trees were just coming out, and sun shafts passing through the upper branches bathed the wood in a soft green light. I parked my bike and picked out a comfortable spot in the leaf mold.
