Icebreaker Shirase back from Antarctica
The Maritime Self-Defense Force’s icebreaker Shirase returned to Tokyo’s Harumi Pier on Monday, completing its mission to support Japan’s Antarctic research expedition team.
After leaving Japan on Nov. 11 last year, the 12,650-ton ship picked up about 80 people, chiefly members of the 58th expedition team, in Australia and arrived at fast ice some 560 meters off the coast of Japan’s Showa Station on Dec. 28, according to the MSDF.
During its mission, the Shirase delivered more than 1,000 tons of supplies such as food and fuel to the Antarctic research base.
“As the ice was thin, [the Shirase] berthed smoothly,” said MSDF Petty Officer Second Class Yuka Matsumoto, 34, who joined the mission as a galley crew member.

以前裏ゼミでgalley proofで「校正刷り、ゲラ刷り」という意味になることを学びましたが、galleyだけではどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1ガレー船（昔奴隷や囚人にこがせた軍船） 2（船、飛行機の）調理室 3（印刷）galley proof」とありました。
LDOCEには “a kitchen on a ship” や “a long low Greek or Roman ship with sails which was rowed by slaves in the past” などと定義されています。
語源は諸説あるようですが、Online Etymology Dictionaryによると、その中の1つに “13c., "seagoing vessel having both sails and oars," from Old French galie,”とあり、 “Meaning "cooking range or cooking room on a ship" dates from 1750” とも説明されていることから、もともとは船を意味することばでしたが、後に船の調理場のこともさすようになったことがわかりました。（aqua）
