　今回取り上げる表現は、“beat out”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、野球に関する用いられ方で「A〈ゴロ〉をヒットにする」という意味が載っていました。Merriam-Websterでは“to turn (a routine ground ball or a bunt) into a hit in baseball by fast running to first base”と定義されています。
　“beat A out [out A]”で「A〈相手など〉を打ち負かす」という意味があり、こちらの意味で使われることが多いです。ちなみに、この表現は主にアメリカ英語で用いられるようです。(Blue Sky)
