Asakusa parade marks 400th anniversary of red-light district
Visitors to the Asakusa district of Tokyo on April 8 were treated to a special parade that took them back four centuries to a time when people came here for pleasures other than viewing cherry blossoms.
The Edo Yoshiwara Oiran Dochu parade was a recreation of what happened when an "oiran," or high-ranking courtesan, from the Yoshiwara red-light district went to meet a client.
This year's parade was the main event of a cherry blossom festival held in the Asakusa district to mark the 400th anniversary of the opening of Yoshiwara as a licensed red-light district.

“red-light district”を取り上げます。 『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「売春のさかんな地域、紅灯の巷、赤線」とありました。ここでは「遊郭」が適切かと思います。
Merriam-Webster.comでは“a district in which houses of prostitution are frequent”と定義されています。
“red-light”の由来は売春宿は赤ランプを掲げていたことからで、日本語の方はそういった地域を地図上で赤い線で囲っていたことからこのような言い方をしていたそうです。
パレードには小学生なども参加し、地元町会女性部による模擬店やフリーマーケットも開かれ、大変賑わったようです。(flyingbird)
