1 year after deployment, SDF members blend with locals on Yonagunijima
March 28 marked the first anniversary of the deployment of a Ground Self-Defense Force coastal surveillance unit in Japan’s westernmost point, Yonagunijima island in Okinawa Prefecture. This is the first surveillance unit deployed to the Nansei Islands, deemed by the Defense Ministry as the “front line of remote island defense (see below).” We examine the current situation on this border island, where public opinion over the unit’s presence was so divided that a local referendum had to be held.

On a clear day, the silhouette of Taiwan — just 110 kilometers away — is visible from the hilly west side of the island on which the Yonaguni camp is located. This is the point from which the unit monitors nearby ships from a radar tower 40 meters tall.
