Tokyo Fashion Week kicks off

Tokyo Fashion Week has begun, with the 2017-18 autumn-winter collections being shown at the Shibuya Hikarie commercial complex in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, and other venues through Saturday.

Designer Yukimi Kawashima of fashion label Aula was among those showing their new lines in Shibuya on the event’s first day Monday. Kawashima’s collection, as seen in the photo, made use of elements such as leather straps, knitted fabric and other features to portray a sleek and powerful feminine look.

Tokyo Fashion Week is officially titled Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo and organized by the Japan Fashion Week Organization. During the week, 52 labels are presenting their new collections at various venues.

　sleekを取り上げます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、形容詞では「1（毛皮や髪が）なめらかな、つやのある　2（車などが）格好のいい」という意味があり、他動詞では「（文語）（毛皮や髪）をなめらかにする、なでつける（back, down）」となることがわかりました。「つや」というワードから、以前英検プリントでsheenという単語が出てきたことを思い出しました。
　LDOCEには3つの意味が載っており、 “a vehicle or other object that is sleek has a smooth attractive shape”, “sleek hair or fur is straight, shiny, and healthy-looking”, “someone who is sleek looks rich and is well dressed” とありました。これらの意味から考えると、記事の中のsleekは豪華でおしゃれなイメージを表すために用いられているのではないかと思いました。（aqua）
