Opposition demands summoning of school operator

Members of Japan's opposition continue to demand a private school operator be summoned for questioning in the Diet. The case involves the school's purchase of public land at a fraction of its market value.

Members of the Democratic Party, the Japanese Communist Party and others have called for the operator's president, Yasunori Kagoike, and others involved in the deal to appear before the Diet. The governing Liberal Democratic Party has expressed reluctance to honor the demand.

　気になったのは，“a fraction of”という表現です。“fraction”を『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)で調べてみると，「(全体に対して)一部，小部分，断片」といった意味が記載されていました。そこから派生して，“a fraction of~”で「何分の1かのわずかな〜」を意味します。Cambridge Dictionary Onlineでは，“a part of a whole number in mathematics, such as ½ or ¾”と定義されています。したがって，この記事では「〔土地評価額のうちの〕わずかな額で」などと表せます。
