Eyeing land sale, school operator offered bundle to LDP lawmaker

The head director of school operator Moritomo Gakuen offered an apparent bribe to a ruling party lawmaker to reduce the price of state-owned land, but the politician said he flatly rejected the attempt.

The Asahi Shimbun has found that the director, Yasunori Kagoike, repeatedly made requests to Upper House member Yoshitada Konoike, a former state minister in charge of disaster prevention, when Osaka-based Moritomo Gakuen was negotiating with the government over the sale of land for a new elementary school.

　取り上げるのは，“devil’s tongue”という表現です。「コンニャク」という日本語に対応する単語として“konjac”が用いられているのをよく見かけますが，“devil’s tongue”も同じ意味を表します。この表現は，コンニャクの花が「花びらから長い舌が出ているような姿」をしているところから来ているそうです。
