LOS ANGELES — Hollywood’s elite hits the red carpet on Sunday for the Golden Globes, launching a fiercely-contested awards season that looks set to reward escapist fantasy and gritty drama in equal measure.
The Globes has a reputation for delighting in its eccentric picks so its record in predicting Oscars glory has been patchy over the years, but it is a huge draw for the stars and remains for many a solid bellwether for Academy Awards success.
“bellwether”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「先導者，率先する人」「風潮・傾向などを示す人」とありました。語源は中期英語のbelwether, belleweder で、wetherは去勢した羊を表しますが、鈴をつけた群れの先頭にいる羊として、「先導する人」という意味になっていることがわかりました。Camblidge English Dictionaryによると“someone or something that shows how a situation will develop or change”と定義されています。今回、ノミネートされている作品の中では『ラ・ラ・ランド』が最有力とされているようですが、その他『ムーンライト』や『Manchester by the Sea』なども注目されており、どの作品がゴールデングローブ賞に輝くのか楽しみです。(lua)
