Eaton and heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton announced their retirements Wednesday in side-by-side essays on their website.

今回取り上げるのはdecathlonです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では「十種目競技」（一日目は100m、走幅跳、砲丸投、走高跳、400m、二日目は110mH、円盤投、棒高跳、やり投、1500m）とあり、関連語として「五種目競技」の“pentathlon”が載っていました。
他にも記事内にある“heptathlete”は「七種目競技」となるようです。
Oxford Living Dictionaryなども参考にしてみると、“-athlon”はギリシャ語で“contest”を表すそうで、そこに数字（種目数）をつけるとそれぞれ「-種目競技」を表せられるということがわかりました。(flyingbird)
