Indian police in Pune hold 'snake venom smugglers'

Officers found 70 snakes, including Russell's vipers and cobras, as well as 30ml of snake venom, in a flat where one of the accused lived in Pune.
The snakes were found in wooden boxes and gunny bags and have now been handed to wildlife officials.
Selling snake venom is profitable in parts of India, where keeping protected wildlife in captivity is illegal.

今回気になった単語はgunnyです。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では「黄麻（こうま）の粗い布、ズック」とあり、アメリカ英語では“gunnysack”で「南京袋、麻袋」とありました。じゃがいもや小麦を入れる袋を指すようです。

LDOCEにも“gunnysack”で“a large bag made from rough material and used for storing grain, coal, potatoes etc”と定義されていました。

Online Etymology Dictionaryで調べると、サンスクリット語で“sack”を表す“goni”が語源だそうです。(flyingbird)
