日本からは「君の名は。」を含む３作品がアニー賞にノミネートされ、受賞を競うことになります。

‘Your Name.,’ ‘Miss Hokusai,’ ‘Red Turtle’ vie for Annie Award

Makoto Shinkai’s blockbuster “Your Name.” and Keiichi Hara’s Annecy 2015 Jury Award winner “Miss Hokusai,” as well as Studio Ghibli Inc.’s co-produced “The Red Turtle,” have been nominated for the 44th annual Annie Awards.

Established in 1972, the Annie Awards are given by the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA-Hollywood, to recognize excellence in animated works released in the United States in the past year. They are often referred to as the Academy Awards for animation.

今回注目した表現は、“vie for”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「«…を得ようと/…しようと/…の点で/…をめぐって»競う、張り合う(compete)«for/with, against/to do/in/over»」とありました。

LDOCEでは、“to compete very hard with someone in order to get something”と定義されています。

今回の表現はフランス語からきている表現です。発音も/vái/となっており、気をつけなければなりません。『ウィズダム英和辞典』の定義にもあったように、「競う」という意味の単語は他に“compete”がありますが、“vie”の方が固い表現だそうです。(Blue Sky)
