昨日のプリントで学習した“take (have) a gander at”が使われている記事を見つけたので、取りあげます。

まず、“gander”を『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で引くと「ガチョウ(ガン)の雄( male goose)」とあり、“take(have) a gander at”で「ちらっと見ること」を表すことがわかりました。

この記事で“put intended”とあるように、お店を覗く動作と“big goose”が、かけられていることがわかります。

また、『英辞郎 on the web』で、“gander”には動詞で「（ガチョウのように）見る」とありました。これはガチョウが首を伸ばしている様子からきているようです。
同じように、“take a gander at”もガチョウが首をキョロキョロと動かす仕草から意味が派生したのではないでしょうか。(flyingbird)
