Killer CATS - how a bite from your moggy has so much bacteria it could be LIFE THREATENING

Pet owners are being warned to watch out for signs of sepsis after revealing a cat's bite could lead to a potentially life-threatening infection.

Eight out of ten cat bites will become infected, experts warn, as moggies inject bacteria into the tissue when they sink their teeth into their victims, causing blood poisoning.

And while cuts that don't bleed might appear less dangerous - they are actually the most deadly because the wound is likely to have gone deeper.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), "a cat bite injury, particularly to the hand, can be devastating in terms of infection and permanent disability if not treated appropriately".

The hand is the most risky place to be bitten because the joints and tendons are close to the surface of the skin and if bacteria from a bite gets in to these parts of the hand the infection can be harder to treat.

Maxim D. Horwitz, a consultant hand and wrist surgeon who treats dog, cat - and human - bites at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, said he often treats cat bites that have turned into serious injuries.
