Annual Tori no Ichi fair held at Asakusa shrine

The annual Tori no Ichi fair for good luck and business success began Friday at Otori Shrine in Asakusa, Tokyo.

The banging of drums heralded the start of the fair at the stroke of midnight. The shrine bustled with people buying kumade bamboo rakes and other lucky charms. The fair is held on the days of the rooster — allocated based on the 12 animal signs of the Oriental zodiac — in November.

More than 100 stalls opened on the shrine’s grounds. People yelled, “Hanjo, hanjo” [prosper, prosper] and clapped whenever they sold kumade rakes decorated with lucky charms, such as beckoning cats and the Seven Deities of Good Luck.

今回取り上げるのはstrokeです。strokeには脳卒中や水泳のひとかき、打撃などの意味がありますが、今回はどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、5つ目に可算名詞で「（時計、鐘）の打つ音、鳴る音」という意味が見つかりました。LDOCEには “a single sound made by a clock giving the hours, or by a bell, gong etc” と定義されております。
今回は “at the stroke of midnight” で「夜の12時ちょうどに」となるかと思われます。
