‘Pokemon’ no-go: Service provider blocks gameplay in all vehicles

“Pokemon Go” can no longer be played behind the wheel after the popular game’s service provider, Niantic Inc., disabled gameplay at driving speed for all users across the globe.

The move comes after a spate of traffic accidents and even several deaths were linked to drivers being distracted by playing with the smartphone app.

However, the change, implemented on Nov. 7, means that the game will be unplayable not only for drivers but passengers on cars and trains, too.

“We responded based on a wide range of opinions we received,” an official with the Japanese public relations office of the San Francisco-based company said.

According to the operator, players are no longer able to spin Pokestops if they are moving at over a certain speed. Users can collect game items by swiping the screen at Pokestops, but with the new update, the motion will be rendered obsolete. Niantic has not disclosed what this speed limit is.

今回は “a spate of traffic accidents” となっており、交通事故が短い期間に多発したことが
うかがえます。
