今回取り上げる表現は “eye-opener” です。

『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 文字から想像できる通り「<口>目をみはらせるもの」とありました。また「暴露[啓発]的な事実」とも記載され, 今回は後者の表現がより適切であると感じました。

Merriam-Webster.comには “something startling, surprising, or enlightening” と定義されています。

上記の英和辞典によると, “eye-opener” は「目ざましの飲み物」をも指すそうです。両者が人に作用する状況は異なりますが, どちらも「目を開かせるもの」として, 共通していることがわかりました。(Cayu)
