Manhattan Bridge cemetery
It's hard enough to find suitable living space in New York City, so you can imagine it’s equally as challenging locating sufficient space for the dead -- and there’s quite a lot of death in New York: 144 bodies amassed each day, according to Atlas Obscura. That’s where Columbia University’s DeathLab comes in, offering alternatives to traditional cemeteries in an “era of global warming, overcrowding and leave-no-trace environmentalism”. One proposed alternative to traditional interment is Constellation Park, a cemetery of sorts where hundreds of pods filled with decaying bodies attached to the underside of Manhattan Bridge would generate enough energy to decoratively light up the water of the East River below.

今回取り上げる表現は、“amass”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(長時間かけて)〈財産・時間など〉を貯める、蓄える(accumulate)；…を集める」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“if you amass money, knowledge, information etc, you gradually collect a large amount of it”と定義されていました。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』にもあったように、“accumulate”にも「(徐々に)蓄える」という意味があり、“amass”の類義語です。“accumulate”の項目には、句動詞の“build up”も同じようなニュアンスで使用することができると載っていました。(Blue Sky)
