Bird’s-eye view paintings of Hiroshima circa 1945 on display

HIROSHIMA--A decades-old booklet containing pictures of Hiroshima before and after the atomic bombing of the city by a painter famed for bird’s-eye landscapes is on exhibition until the end of November at a library here.

Titled “Hiroshima,” the English-language illustrated booklet, believed to have been published in 1949 during the Allied occupation of Japan, has been donated to the Hiroshima City Central Library.

Hatsuzaburo Yoshida (1884-1955) was nicknamed the “modern-day Hiroshige” after the master ukiyo-e landscape artist of the early 19th century.

Yoshida is famed for producing many bird’s-eye view paintings and illustrative maps of popular sightseeing spots around Japan.

“This copy is in great condition and retains its original vibrant colors,” Hiroko Ishida, a curator at the library, said of the booklet. “It's a valuable find.”

Library staff said only a few copies are known to have survived.

Yoshida was commissioned by a Hiroshima-based publishing company and stayed in the city during 1946, according to the library and what is printed in the booklet.

He recreated the lost city of Hiroshima and scenes of destruction based on hundreds of testimonies and reports by atomic bomb survivors.

今回取り上げる表現は、“vibrant”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第3版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「鮮明な、鮮やかな〈色・光など〉」とありました。

確認のためにLDOCEを引いたところ、“a vibrant colour is bright and strong”と定義されていました。

“vibrant”の第一義には“«…で»活気に満ちた[あふれた]«with»と載っていました(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。先生が以前に“vi-”がつくものは生き生きとしたイメージを含むと言っていたのを思い出しました。今回の表現も該当していると思います。(Blue Sky)
