Laundry care symbols to be changed in Dec.

Laundry care symbols displayed on clothing tags are scheduled to be completely revised in December for the first time in half a century. Familiar depictions of a washing machine and shirt will disappear, and the 22 symbols currently in use will increase to 41.

However, as few people are aware of the upcoming change, the central government is making efforts to spread recognition of the new symbols.

The current laundry care symbols were introduced in Japan in 1968 in accordance with the Japanese Industrial Standards. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry decided to change the marks in 2014 to meet the standards of the International Organization for Standardization — recognized in Europe and other regions — since it had become problematic to replace symbols when clothing is imported and exported.

The new symbols will be adopted starting Dec. 1. Clothes with the current symbols will be sold in shops as they are until the end of November, after which clothing with the new labels will begin to phase in.

The new symbols comprise five basic marks — washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and cleaning — as well as marks such as horizontal lines to indicate washing power and dots to indicate temperature levels.

LDOCEには “phase something in” で “to gradually start using a new system, law, process etc” と定義されており、新しい法律が施行される際にもこの表現を用いるようです。

過去にも“phase out” は取り上げられておりました。(aqua)
