quadriplegic 復習

先日、公開中の映画『世界一キライなあなたに』(“Me Before You”)という映画を観てまいりました。そちらの評価などが気になったので、調べてみました。

To enjoy Me Before You, you must first yield to its questionable central premise: that even if you’re heir to a castle, handsome and in love, being confined to a wheelchair makes living a hollow pursuit.

Pull your moral blinkers on tight enough and there’s a sweet Jane Eyre-meets-Rochester romance to be found in Thea Sharrock’s adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ popular novel.

Emilia Clarke is irresistibly likeable (and brimming with bankable British “quirk”) as carer Lou Clark, and quadriplegic Will Traynor (Sam Clafin), her first and only patient, reveals himself (eventually) to be more than a boorish posh boy.

Despite the stunning south Wales locations and a supporting cast of household names, the world beyond Lou and Will’s charismatic bubble is austere and two-dimensional, an aesthetic that feels intentional but is puzzling nonetheless — this professed weepy holds its audience at arm’s length.

今回取り上げる単語は、quadriplegic /kwɑ̀drəplídʒɪk/です。かつて大ベストセラーを生み、最近ではゲス不倫で有名になったあの方を思い出しますが、映画のなかにおいても重要なワードです。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “paralysis of all four limbs”と定義されておりました。tetraplegiaともいうそうです。

４を表す “quadri”と “paraplegia”をかけ合わせた単語で、1920年代から使用されているとのことです。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「四肢麻痺」と載っておりました。
また上記の “paraplegia”は「対麻痺」という意味です。患者のことを遠回しに “a person with paraplegia”ということもあるそうです。
